I'm in my second class of the day; it's called Classroom Learning Enviornments. Basically we're just learning about early childhood. I think the focus is kindergarten. I'm about to starve to death (don't ask me why, I did eat lunch), and class is always boring, so I thought I'd write a little bit to take my mind off of things. :-)

I haven't really written about my schedule yet, have I? Well, I have a little over two hours before class dismisses, so I think I have time. :-) I know I've already told you that I got a new job, so I'll describe that a little bit more now.

I'm working at the Food Court on campus. I'm really enjoying it. I've never worked in food services before, so I wasn't exactly sure what to expect. Basically all I do is make sandwiches in the deli for people (like a Subway) and work at the cash register. Everybody who works there is supposed to be able to do everything - make sandwiches, be a cashier, serve from the hot bar, make sure everything is stocked, etc. I've done closing once. That's basically just restocking and cleaning. I didn't like it too much, but I guess if I had to do it more regularly I'd get used to it. I don't have a set schedule - they send out a new schedule at the end of each week. So when you start you give them your schedule of availability, and they go from that to make the weekly schedule. My availability is as follows: Monday - 3pm-6pm; Tuesday - 9am-noon and 6-closing (about 8:30); Thursday - 9am-noon and 3-5:30 (I've never been scheduled during this time yet). I'm leaving Monday mornings, Wednesday mornings, and Fridays open for Practicums (I have to complete 60 hours in the schools this semester - more on that later).

My class schedule really isn't bad at all. The classes aren't that hard, either; there's just a ton of work that has to be done. Jenna and I are together in every class; we worked very hard arranging things last semester to make sure that would happen. We're on campus at least once every day (excluding Fridays - for the most part, classes aren't offered on Fridays). The most classes we have in a day is two. Not too shabby. Here's the breakdown (I'm not going to describe the classes, because that will take forever, I don't want to put you to sleep, and, frankly, I don't feel like writing it all again :-) ):

  • Monday: 1-2:40 > General Methods
  • Tuesday: 1:15-2:30 > Writing for Elementary Teachers; 3-5:30 > Classroom Learning Environments (I'm in this class now)
  • Wednesday: 1-3:40 > General Methods (notice it's an hour longer on Wednesdays)
  • Thursday: 1-2:30 > Writing for Elementary Teachers; 6-7:30 > Trade Books and the Classroom Teacher (notice the 3 1/2 hour break)

So I said I'd talk more about the practicums, and then when I got ready to talk about my classes I decided not to describe what the classes were like. Go me. :-)

We have two 30-hour Practicums. One is for General Methods. Most of the time we'll just be observing. The main requirement, however, is that we have to create and teach 4 half-hour lessons. This will be done on four consecutive Fridays. I'll either be in the 1st grade with a girl named Danielle or in the 2nd grade with Jenna (most of us have partners). The reason I'm not sure which grade I'm in is because there are two Amy's in the class, and both of our last names start with M. So the e-mail that the professor sent out said:

    1st grade - Danielle / Amy M.
    2nd grade - Jenna / Amy M.

So you see my dilemna. :-) I sent the professor an e-mail reminding him that there are two Amy M.'s in the class and asking him to specify which Amy was in which grade level. I haven't heard back from him yet. Naturally, I want to work with Jenna. Thankfully, Jenna wants to work with me, too. :-) We'll see how that works out.

The second practicum is for the Classroom Environments class (Early Childhood class). We will be in kindergarten classes. We got to choose two schools and then the professor assigns you to one of them. Jenna and I had already decided to try our hardest to get into the same kindergarten class so we wrote down the exact same first and second choices. One of them was my old school (Jenna's idea - I can't believe I didn't think of it myself). I called the principal and talked to her for a while. Turns out there are only four students in the class this year (at the campus we want, at least - the school has two campuses now), and the first graders join the kindergarteners for a couple of hours every morning for combined instruction. So that should be interesting. For the 30 hours we'll be there, we have three assignments:

    1. Observe - write a paper on the observations.
    2. Observe at least three separate instances of playtime - write a paper on those observations.
    3. Teach a lesson - write a reflection on how it went. (I think the classroom teacher does a reflection on that, too, for us to turn in.)

I'm excited about going back to my old school. I've been gone for so long, I don't know who's there any more.

...Wow, class let out half an hour early...wasn't expecting that!
